MG Vintage Racers celebrated its 18th Focus Event at VRG’s “Jefferson 500” at West Virginia’s Summit Point Raceway the weekend of May 17-19, with more than 260 vintage racecars competing. MGVR selects one vintage race each year to designate as its Focus Event, and encourages all MG racers to attend. They work with the sanctioning body to include all-MG races, as well as hosting MGVR socials and presenting awards at the event. This year’s Focus Event attracted 74 MG racers, which meant two separate all-MG races were necessary—one for MG Ts and MGAs, and one race for MGBs and Midgets.
In addition to a weekend of great racing, the following MGVR Awards were presented at VRG’s banquet Saturday evening: Spirit Award, the “Big Copper Bucket,” presented to John Burgess, who was selected by his racing peers as having the best MG Vintage Racing Spirit; The Bill Parish Award went to Dave Nicholas for “Having the most fun without a concern for winning;” The Doff of the Cap Award, to Joe Lightfoot as the MGB racer best “Preserving the original heritage of MGB racers;” and the MGB-V8 Trophy, given to Les Gonda (pictured) for finishing 1st overall in the MG race with his MGB-V8.
